Our local Women In Ag group did a presentation at Gouge Elementary School in Bakersville on September 12th. There were about twelve presenters and demonstrators who made various exhibits and demonstrations– all agriculture-related. The idea was to get kids (grades K through four) interested in farming. We were helping to build future farmers!
My own favorite was the beautiful Belgian draft horse. I’ve loved horses since I was a little girl and this big guy was gorgeous. One local farmer had goats– and the kids loved them. Other exhibits and demonstrations included growing strawberries and raising beef cattle.
My own exhibit and demonstration was my Uncle Jim’s worm farm. There were fifteen groups of kids who passed through during the five hour event, and you can imagine trying to hold the attention of a bunch of fidgety and rambunctious elementary school students!
So I grabbed their attention by starting each demonstration with, “OK, guys. Today we’re going to talk about WORM POOP!” Well, that got some “Eeews” and assorted “Cool” and “Whoa” reactions.
I showed them an infographic of worm anatomy and then the worms all snug in their trays. I talked about how and what I fed them, and demonstrated how I drew the worm castings from the worm farm’s lower layers. We talked about how important worms are to good soil health– naturally.
It was a long day but it was fun. And gratifying.
