Still Putting Food By

Happy Day Before Thanksgiving!!!  It’s November 22nd and we’re still putting food by here on The Little Half Acre.  This week it’s all about apples!

Our neighbor to the north has two apples trees that he doesn’t spray or prune.  Needless to say, the apples look awful — lots of imperfections on the skins and a few worms here and there.  That’s okay though; what they don’t want to fool with, we’re happily making use of!  Best as I can tell, they are a Grimes Golden and a Virginia Beauty and we’re enjoying the apples they produced this year!

Applesauce, fried apples and frozen slices for mid-winter muffins and pies and for serving on top of homemade whole wheat, organic bread.  Yum!  That will surely be appreciated when there’s snow on the ground.  And those strawberries that I thought were done for the year?

Still producing!  Okay, so they’re not producing very much, but it’s still awesome to wander outside and munch on a few fresh strawberries.  Even after an overnight temp of 20 degrees, the mulched and covered berries are sweeter than ever.  And, thanks to my big brother, I know now that the ever-bearing variety like I have (Seascape) means that they produce a big crop in June and then keep on producing in small amounts for several months afterward.  Definitely need to get more of these planted next year!
