The moment you make hard and fast decisions to do something a certain way, everything changes. All your decision making processes go right out the door. Here’s why:
When we were looking at different properties here in the mountains, one of the big concerns about this particular place was how many mature trees there were on the property, as well as on the neighboring properties on either side. We’ve cut down 11 trees on our half acre over the past two years. Even after that, a lot of planning has gone into deciding where to grow our food, where to put the chicken coop and where to plant fruit trees based on the amount of sun different areas received. Of course, you know what happens when you make plans and then – worse – act on them. Yep, our neighbor to the west side just cut down all the trees lining the creek a couple of months ago!
Now that those trees are down, that area will get full sun. It would be a great place for a bunch of dwarf fruit trees and/or fruit and nut bushes — however — the chicken coop is already in place and it’s too late to move it. Oh well. And our neighbor to the east said his family is coming to cut down all those trees next weekend. So much for the shade garden on the eastern edge of our half acre! Just kidding, more sun is a really good thing! Now The Little Half Acre will get a whole lot more growing space from top to bottom. Yay!
