Maybe??"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s April 27th and there are only three days to go until May.\u00a0 So that means we&#8217;re enjoying decent temps, sunny days and lots of fast growing veggies in the garden beds, right?\u00a0 Right?<\/p>\n<p>Not a chance.\u00a0 Sigh.\u00a0 This is the mountains after all and the one thing you can count on is that it&#8217;s <em>never<\/em> predictable.\u00a0 So far it&#8217;s been very wet and cool and all my pretty radishes, snow peas, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard, lettuce, chard, kale, pak choy, arugula, strawberries (yeah, you get it) are just sitting there at about 2 to 6 inches tall and the farmer&#8217;s market opens in just two and a half weeks!\u00a0 And that&#8217;s the <em>delayed<\/em> opening date cuz of this whole Corona virus thing.\u00a0 Yikes!\u00a0 Better start praying for some sunshine!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2330\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2330\" style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Spring.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2330 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Spring.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"1080\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Spring.jpg 608w, https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Spring-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Spring-576x1024.jpg 576w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 608px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 608\/1080;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snow peas, radishes and Japanese salad turnips<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No matter how I try to prepare, farming, as they say, &#8220;ain&#8217;t easy.&#8221;\u00a0 They also say, &#8220;if farmin&#8217; was easy everyone would do it!&#8221;\u00a0 And they would be right.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s take squash and zucchini for example.\u00a0 Now, how many times do you think your Happy Homesteader (me) has started those seeds indoors in pots this spring?\u00a0 That would be three so far and I may start them again in a few more days.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because squash and zucchini don&#8217;t really like to be transplanted and if their roots outgrow the pot before you can transplant them out into the garden, they won&#8217;t do well.<\/p>\n<p>So you gamble on when the weather will be warm enough and try to gauge how early to start the tender plants so you will be prepared with lots of lovely cucurbits to sell at the market.\u00a0 And why try to start early?
