this one&#8217;s just for Looks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the weather cooling off and the bugs going away, it&#8217;s finally time to get to that list of never ending projects.\u00a0 There are several things going on around the homestead right now but most of them are about food &#8212; growing it, protecting it, harvesting it and selling it.\u00a0 This project is purely about aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got an ancient (and hideous looking) concrete wall running along the front of the yard next to our road.\u00a0 So far, the area in front of the wall has pretty much been grass and weeds.\u00a0 Mostly weeds.\u00a0 A couple of years ago we planted some day lilies that my sister-in-law gave us and put a couple of &#8216;sort of&#8217; decorative rocks near the steps, but that was it.\u00a0 We&#8217;re finally getting around to completing that project.\u00a0 When it&#8217;s done, it will be perennial flowers with maybe a few edibles but its main function will be to provide pollinators for the insects and to make our little half acre homestead a bit more presentable.<\/p>\n<p>The Innocent Bystander got roped into digging up the existing soil.\u00a0 Luckily, it wasn&#8217;t our usual horrible red clay!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Larry-Working-e1572447898390.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2262 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Larry-Working-e1572447898390.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/1000;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To backtrack a bit, we&#8217;re taking out half of a sixteen foot long raised bed at the back of the house along with an eight foot bed next to it because I miss having a private place to sit in the shade while I &#8220;survey my kingdom.&#8221;\u00a0 The front porch is way too hot most of the year and, by taking those two beds out (more on that in another post), I can put the porch furniture out back with the sun umbrella up, sip some coffee and appreciate the beauty around us.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, we took the soil out of one of those beds and dumped it in front of the concrete wall where I had covered the existing grass\/weeds months ago with black plastic to kill as much of it as possible.\u00a0 I also added the expended soil from twenty or so microgreens growing trays to end up with a depth of about six inches of good, rich dirt.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-2255 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/concrete-wall-two-e1572447657205.jpg'><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-src=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/concrete-wall-two-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail lazyload\" alt=\"\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/concrete-wall-two-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/concrete-wall-two-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/concrete-wall-two-45x45.jpg 45w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px;
