--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-1-1795'>\n\t\t\t\tA food forest!\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The 1\/4 circle bed to the right of the front porch was built using Morag Gamble&#8217;s method.\u00a0 She doesn&#8217;t use cardboard at all.\u00a0 Her method?\u00a0 Use a pitchfork to gently aerate the soil by sticking the tines in a few inches and rocking the fork back and forth.\u00a0 No digging or turning.\u00a0 Add a layer of compost &#8211; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-2-1794'>\n\t\t\t\tToo pretty to cut!\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t plant as much in the &#8220;Morag&#8221; bed since my compost was the microgreens soil and roots.\u00a0 I was afraid the decomposing roots would tie up nitrogen.\u00a0 This is bed is still very much &#8220;in progress.&#8221;\u00a0 But the kohlrabi, rhubarb and hostas (behind the sunflowers) did well and the two Hardy Kiwi are busy putting down an extensive root system so I&#8217;m hoping for lots of kiwi fruit next year.\u00a0 This bed also gets totally saturated when a bent gutter over the area sends torrents of water into the bed during rainstorms.\u00a0 A ton of sunflowers from the old microgreens trays came up on their own and I decided to just let them grow instead of planting more veggies. Seriously, who among us has the heart to cut down a sunflower??<\/p>\n<p>The left quarter circle produced amazing veggies (in addition to the many weeds).\u00a0 Although I didn&#8217;t plant blueberries there after all, the Hardy Kiwi, swiss chard, kale, pole beans, cabbage and cucumbers filled the space nicely and the harvest has been exceptional.\u00a0 This bed was watered regularly to make up for the &#8220;unusual&#8221; irrigation system of the right side bed.\u00a0 Both beds are still being &#8220;built up&#8221; and will hold a honeyberry or blueberry when it&#8217;s all finished.\u00a0 The veggies will either climb sunflower and amaranth plants or grow in between herbs and perennial flowers throughout the beds.<\/p>\n<p>Looks like I will be making fewer trips to town to pick up cardboard!\u00a0 Stocking up with a few bales of straw will be a lot easier and faster.\u00a0 And in the future?\u00a0 We&#8217;ll definitely be using the &#8220;Morag Method&#8221; here on The Little Half Acre.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember a post several months ago about comparing different methods for building no dig garden beds?\u00a0 Here&#8217;s that link: Comparing No Dig Methods Well, the results are in&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_editorskit_title_hidden":false,"_editorskit_reading_time":0,"_editorskit_is_block_options_detached":false,"_editorskit_block_options_position":"{}","_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[29,79,68,80],"class_list":["post-1786","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gardening","tag-food-forests","tag-morag-gamble","tag-no-dig-gardening","tag-no-till-gardening"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.9 -
