{"id":1779,"date":"2017-07-17T14:30:57","date_gmt":"2017-07-17T18:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/?p=1779"},"modified":"2017-07-17T14:30:57","modified_gmt":"2017-07-17T18:30:57","slug":"long-overdue-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/long-overdue-post\/","title":{"rendered":"Long Overdue Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How does an entire month go by without a blog post?\u00a0 How???\u00a0 Cuz homesteading ain&#8217;t easy folks, that&#8217;s how.\u00a0 It takes a lot of sweat and, even more, a <em>lot<\/em> of<em> time<\/em>.\u00a0 Otherwise, everyone would do it, right?\u00a0 So, just exactly what does a homesteader do all day you ask?<\/p>\n<p>Plant.\u00a0 Weed.\u00a0 Start Seed.\u00a0 Squash bad bugs.\u00a0 Weed.\u00a0 Harvest.\u00a0 Weed.\u00a0 Squash bad bugs.\u00a0 Plant.\u00a0 Water.\u00a0 Weed.\u00a0 Squash bad bugs.\u00a0 Weed.\u00a0 Harvest.\u00a0 Weed.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, I know, there&#8217;s definitely a theme running here.\u00a0 Why is it that weeds can survive anywhere and under any conditions?\u00a0 Why do they inevitably grow right under a vegetable plant so that, when you pull them up, you often pull up said vegetable plant as well?\u00a0 Why are their roots deeper than veggie roots?\u00a0 Why does a six inch layer of mulch not keep weeds out of the growing beds?\u00a0 Why are the weeds consistently lush and deep green while veggie and fruit plants struggle with heat and\/or too little or too much rain?<\/p>\n<p>Usually, about this time of year, I just give up and let the weeds take over until cooler weather rolls around.\u00a0 Once fall has arrived and I can work outside in more than just the few short morning hours, I get a bit more caught up and the old homestead looks a little less scruffy.\u00a0 So, other than the ongoing weed battle, it&#8217;s all good here on The Little Half Acre that Could.<\/p>\n<p>Most things are growing well &#8212; the easy to grow stuff like green beans, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, beets and carrots.\u00a0 Normally, I would list tomatoes as well, but not this year.\u00a0 Blight.\u00a0 Everywhere.\u00a0 Climbing inexorably up each stem.\u00a0 Sigh.\u00a0 Not gonna be a lot of tomatoes this year on The Little Half Acre.\u00a0 But hey, there&#8217;s a been a valuable learning experience here so that&#8217;s okay.\u00a0 Seems like tomatoes don&#8217;t like to be planted too early.\u00a0 The first tomatoes I put out are totally eaten up with blight.\u00a0 Guess I&#8217;ve been lucky so far with early planting but not this year.\u00a0 The second round of plants (started several weeks later) showed some signs of blight as well, but since they were planted out much later they are much healthier and seem to be holding their own.\u00a0 So, next year, I start seed later and the plants stay in the greenhouse much longer before being planted out.\u00a0 The good news is that we&#8217;ll still have tomatoes to eat fresh even if we won&#8217;t have many to freeze.<\/p>\n<p>Hhmmmm. . .
