{"id":1245,"date":"2016-11-22T20:46:34","date_gmt":"2016-11-23T01:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/?p=1245"},"modified":"2016-11-22T20:46:34","modified_gmt":"2016-11-23T01:46:34","slug":"making-some-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/making-some-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Some Changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At last!\u00a0 the new laptop has arrived and I&#8217;m ready to be the &#8220;blogging queen&#8221; again here on The Little Half Acre that Could!\u00a0 So let&#8217;s get started &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, let&#8217;s get started by going backwards.\u00a0 20\/20 hindsight is a lovely thing, but it would be even lovelier if it were 20\/20 <em>foresight<\/em>.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t seem to work that way here on our little homestead.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first projects when we moved here last fall was to get a fenced, deer proof garden area installed.\u00a0 Done.\u00a0 We had ten beds with soil mounded up and wood chips between the growing spaces.\u00a0 We put seven foot tall deer netting around the entire garden area.\u00a0 It truly was a beautiful thing to behold . . . BUT.\u00a0 Apparently, most birds are not smart enough to fly <em>out<\/em> of an enclosed area once they&#8217;ve flown<em> into<\/em> said enclosed area.\u00a0 Picture the Happy Homesteader trying to chase random birds back up and over the netting while Thomas the cat races round and round the <em>outside<\/em> trying to get to the bird trapped on the <em>inside<\/em>.\u00a0 Yep, it was a good idea for all of half an hour.\u00a0 So, phase two &#8212;<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-1245 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_0596-e1479863679314.jpg'><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" data-src=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_0596-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail lazyload\" alt=\"\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_0596-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/thelittlehalfacre.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/IMG_0596-45x45.jpg 45w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The netting came down (at least the part that was pulled down by some rampaging green bean and field pea vines).\u00a0 The rest will come down, along with the posts, when the Happy Homesteader gets around to it.\u00a0 The Innocent Bystander (read, Hubbie) started building wooden frames around a few of the mounded beds as time and funds allowed.\u00a0 On each bed the I.B. attached some of those PVC pipe clips so the PVC can be easily inserted at three foot intervals.\u00a0 Then, depending on what type of critter I&#8217;m trying keep away from the edibles, I can add plastic, bird (and cat) netting or bug mesh quickly and easily as it&#8217;s needed.\u00a0 Deer, cats, rabbits, birds and other critters can be kept away from all those yummy veggies and I don&#8217;t have to walk all the way around the exterior to get in and out of the garden wherever I want.<\/p>\n<p>In the photos above, the wooden frames need to be leveled but it&#8217;s a good start.\u00a0 Or should I say &#8220;second&#8221; start?\u00a0 It&#8217;s all good, we&#8217;re learning and evaluating and changing as we learn.\u00a0 We have surrounded three beds with wood and have seven more to go.\u00a0 I think a really determined critter could still get into the beds but nothing is totally foolproof and, meanwhile, I can protect my veggies from cold wind and temps, from crazy cats and birds and &#8211;
