It seems to be spring here in the North Carolina mountains. Or is it? See those lovely radishes below? That’s from last year’s crop in June. This year the radishes “went over” about three weeks ago. In April. Ditto the salad greens. This time last year, I was selling radishes and gourmet salad blends at the farmer’s market all the way to the end of June. Nope, not this year. The salad greens got bitter weeks ago. In April.
Even the French Breakfast radishes (not shown), which are usually mild at any size, will take the top of your head off, so they have to go as well. And as for the strawberries …. me and a raccoon or two are gonna have a MAJOR fight. The berries are sweet and luscious this year but we’ve only gotten a small handful because the raccoons have a nose for when they are at their peak and grab them before I can. Not good. I have sprayed the border with a ‘critter repellent’ so we’ll see.
All I can say is that so far… it’s a really weird growing season.
