Back to the Strawberries . . . Again

Remember the posts (there were several) about the strawberry bed on the rock wall?  Well, we’re back to that again.  Sigh.  If you’ve been following the blog, you know there were a number of problems that were created because The Happy Homesteader (me) just had to have a strawberry bed right out the back door where a retaining wall is.  Remember that?  How picturesque it would be?  And how easy it would be to just pop out the door every morning throughout the summer and graze on those luscious ever bearing berries?  Well, yeah … about that.

The berries that I ordered from the local extension office last year were supposed to be Seascape, an ever bearing variety that would provide small batches of fresh strawberries throughout the growing season.  Apparently, something got mixed up somewhere along the way because the berries all ripened at once at the end of May.  So not ever bearing.

I didn’t want a bunch of ripe berries all at once.  I didn’t want to make strawberry jam.  I didn’t want frozen berries taking up space in my little freezer compartment.  I wanted FRESH berries!!!  Yes, I’m shouting!

Plan B — find a new location for strawberries so I can order and receive the right berries next year and have fresh strawberries over an extended season.  Great!  Just one more project; what’s the big deal?  Sigh.
